Join the PRSA California Gold Coast Chapter with this month's guest speaker: Michelle Rogers, Consumer Experience Director for the Ventura County Star, part of Gannett and the USA TODAY Network.
Michelle started her career in 1992 as a reporter at a small-town newspaper in Michigan, was promoted to associate editor, editor and then managing editor of eight weekly publications making up the Southeast Michigan region. In 2010, she was named to Digital First Media's ideaLab, where she was given the time and resources to innovate with digital storytelling and social media, in addition to managing her newsrooms. In 2013, her pitch for a community media lab inside a business incubator was approved by DFM and she was given the funding and time to work with individuals, businesses, community leaders and public relations professionals to teach them digital storytelling and social media tools to help facilitate news-sharing partnerships and blogger recruitment. At that time, she was also named director of community engagement and editorial training for DFM's Michigan group. After a series of cutbacks at DFM, she was laid off and made the bold move to leave her home state for California, where she led community engagement and social media strategy at the Record Searchlight in Redding. Two years later, The Star, a sister publication, created the news position of consumer experience director and Rogers was tapped for it, leaving Northern California for the coast.
Today she oversees the programming, production, packaging and promotion of newsroom content, including product development and events. Under her watch, The Star has launched two podcasts and the Ventura Storytellers Project, a program in which local residents are coached by journalists and editors to share true, first-person stories on stage -- journalism told by the people who lived the stories.
Rogers will talk about The Star's social media strategy, use of Facebook groups to engage targeted audiences in discussions around content topics and community engagement efforts, as well as new product development and the newsroom's events strategy to reach new audience. She'll also talk about reporters' use of digital storytelling tools to create more engaging stories and the role of analytics in making strategic decisions around content.
